301 redirects

The 301 redirect is a nickname for a code that a web site server returns and informs the search engine and the browser that the requested page has moved to a different address.

When you request to lift the cover of the engine over the web browsing process using a browser, you find that the data traffic is over HTTP (or its secure version – HTTPS). This protocol is built in the configuration of client-side requests (the browser) and response through the server (the web site the user visits).

There are different types of responses that the server can provide to the browser during their contact, and they are divided into different families. Replying with the return code 200, for example, indicates that the browser request has been processed successfully and will receive a response that will contain the content of the page it is requesting to view.

One of the types of replies is code 301, which indicates that the web page has been permanently stored at another address.

When is a 301 redirect used?

301 redirects are used by website managers when they want to signal to Google that web pages have changed their address regularly. Here are some of the cases where these references are used:

  1. The site has moved to a new domain – The entire site now has a new URL but the site owner wants to keep the site's rankings in the search engines for key phrases that have invested a lot of resources.
  2. The site has moved to a new management system and the original URL cannot be preserved (for example: a customer has decided to upgrade his Vicks website to WordPress-based infrastructure –the Vicks fans will excuse me).
  3. The specific page changed an address within the content management system that used for the whole website.
  4. Content on a particular page has become irrelevant and we want users who arrive to the search engine pages (why waste the traffic?) To find another, relevant, as possible, page.

How to perform 301 redirect?

Before you make 301 referrals on your site, it is very important to understand that we need to act properly. Typically, a sort of mapping table is used where planning which page on the site is directed to which page on the new site. Unordered perform of 301 redirects can cause a lot of damage, which will be difficult to recover.

If so, there are several ways to make 301 redirects:

  1. Editing the htaccess file – Use this file to specify the source and destination URL of the reference that you want to execute
  1. Edit the html file itself and integrate a php reference command.
  1. Using various extensions and plugins designed to perform the referral task, I recommend the redirection extension.
  1. Using a neat content management system interface (like Vicks).

In conclusion

301 redirect can be used by website owners to notify the client browser and the search engines that a specific page / whole site – changed address. According to foreign sources, the linking power of the referenced pages should not be harmed during this, if it is done under careful planning and strict care.
